How To Vent A Bathroom Fan Through The Roof

How To Vent A Bathroom Fan Through The Roof

Should a bathroom fan hose be vented into an attic? If so, how is it done?

During my home inspections, I have come across many bathroom vents incorrectly installed into attics leading to mold and moisture damage.

In this article, you will learn…

  • Why you should never terminate a bathroom vent inside an attic
  • How to properly vent a bathroom fan duct to the outsidethrough an attic
  • The real reason you should insulate a bathroom vent pipe contained in an attic
  • venting-bathroom-fan-into-attic

Can I Vent a Bathroom Fan Into My Attic?

No, you should not vent a bathroom fan directly into an attic. However, you can vent a bathroom fanthroughan attic while it terminates on the roof or gable end.

It seems like such an easy solution, just leave a bathroom vent hose in an attic. It's all outdoor air anyways, right?

Let me tell you: improperly ending a bathroom vent inside an attic can lead to "unintended consequences" — and builders have stopped this bad practice many years ago. Prior to the 90's, builders commonly vented bathrooms into attics.

On my home inspections, it is still a common sight for me to see bathroom vents going directly into the attic — spewing moisture.

The problem with this approach is that all of the moisture in the air goes onto the wood sheathing, insulation, wood rafters, and wood ceiling joists — which can lead to mold growth and rot. Especially during cold weather months, the excess moisture from a bathroom vent can build up frost on the underside of the roof sheathing, and eventually this ice will melt and leak onto the insulation and drywall ceiling.

How Do I Properly Vent A Bathroom Fan Into An Attic?

The correct way to vent a bathroom fan through an attic is to terminate the vent either to the roof or to the gable wall.

Either way, the vent will have to go directly to the outside, and installed with a vent hood cover. The vent hood will have a little flap that opens when air is blowing through the vent, but at other times it will remain closed.

The flap will help prevent outdoor air from going into the home when the bathroom vent is not on. The flap and screen will also prevent birds from nesting in the bathroom vent which is extremely common.

A bird's nest in a bathroom vent will greatly reduce or eliminate the effectiveness of a bathroom exhaust fan. It's also important to note that if you install a roof vent cover for aclothes dryer, you must remove the metal screen because it will catch lint and may turn into a fire hazard.

    Roof Vent Covers

It is also important to note that vent hood covers for the roof are a different and specialized type of cover. You can't just take a normal hood cover and install it on the roof. The roof covers are made frommetal, and are much more robust, and somewhat more expensive.

TheBuilder's Best Roof Vent Cap is powder coated and galvanized—which is really important when it's on the roof. It also comes with the required flapper, as well aspre-drilled holes for an easier installation.

You can view the latest price for the Builder's Best galvanized steel roof cover here.

How Much Will It Cost To Vent Through An Attic?

The cheapest part of installing a new bathroom vent will likely be the supplies. You can get a 25-foot insulated bathroom vent and the cover for around $70 total.

Most of the cost will be in the labor. Also, if you are venting up to the roof, then a roofer will be required which will cost more than if you are venting to a gable wall or soffit.

Installing a new vent through an attic is going to cost on the low end around $200 just for labor, and may be as much as $500 to $750 if it is a complicated vent that goes to the roof.

What About Venting To The Soffit Vent In My Attic?

Even though it is not my preferred installation, it is possible to vent your bathroom fan directly to the soffit vent. In this way, you avoid messing with the roof and the associated leak risks.

The downside of soffit vent installations is that it may disrupts some of the air flow of the soffit venting. Soffit vents work because the warmer attic air (relative to outside) rises, and it creates a suction effect when working in tandem with the ridge vent.

In addition, the excess moisture may result in wood damage and mold growth.

However, if a homeowner really wants to terminate their vent at the soffit, I recommend using a specially made soffit vent cover.

These bathroom fan vent covers are designed to be installed on the soffit vent. TheDundas Jafine Soffit Vent Cover includes a spring-loaded damper (flap) with a flush mount style so it blends into your soffit vent.

I invite you to see the current price for the Dundas Jafine Soffit Cover right here.

Can I Vent My Bathroom Duct To The Ridge Vent?

Another very common thing I see during home inspections is that the bathroom vent is vented just below the ridge vent. This is probably a better thing than venting it to the soffit vent, but it can still cause problems.

When the air in the attic is warmer relative to the exterior, this rising attic air powers the natural soffit-ridge vent system. It creates suction effect and pulls in the cooler exterior air from the soffits as it rises through the ridge vent.

    venting bathroom fan into attic

Also, the vent is always terminating a few inches BELOW the ridge vent, so when it is venting, all of the air is not going directly the outside. Much of the air is bouncing around the edge of the ridge vent, and the wood sheathing. So venting it to the ridge vent can still lead to mold growth and wood damage.

How Do I Prevent Moisture When Venting a Bathroom Into An Attic?

When a bathroom vent is making a long horizontal run in an attic, there is always a risk of condensation or water droplets. I always recommend installing aninsulatedbathroom vent, which is a just a normal vent surrounded by fiberglass insulation.

This will greatly help reduce the potential of condensation forming which may lead to drywall damage or mold problems.

Condensation forms when two different temperatures meet — such as a cold drink on a very hot day — water droplets forms on the outside of the glass.

If you are sending warm interior air through the bathroom vent while attic is very cold, then water may form. In addition to insulating your bathroom vent, you want to avoid U-shaped bends in the vent, because this will allow condensation on the inside of the vent to drip towards the low point of the vent hose.

TheDundas Jafine Insulated Flex Duct is pre-wrapped in fiberglass insulation and includes an outer vapor barrier which helps prevent condensation problems. The Dundas Jafine is a 4-inch duct and 24-feet in length. View the latest price for the Dundas Jafine duct right here.

The Truth About Attic Bathroom Venting

Venting a bath fan through an attic can be done, but itshouldterminate on the outside.

I would by lying if I told you that it will cause problems, it may be totally fine. In fact, I have seen numerous houses that haven't yet had signs of mold with the bath fan venting incorrectly.

    A Few Possible Issues

However, there are a few realpotentialdownsides when a bathroom vent is improperly terminated inside an attic:

    • mold growth
    • wood rot and structural deterioration
    • moist bathroom air is sucked back into the home interior
    • excess moisture attracting rodents and pests

    Plywood For Bathroom Subfloor

    Plywood For Bathroom Subfloor

    1. Hi all,

Question no doubt asked 100's of times, but wanted to check a few things.

I'm renovating bathroom and taking up floor - the old chipboard is very bad in several places.
The floor will be finished with Karndean (splashing out as it's not a big space at all) and they insist on SP101 to be laid before their adhesive.

The fitter however have said there's no point in laying the Karndean under the bath, waste of money he said, this would mean the area under the bath would be exposed - but still covered by the bath, bath panels etc which would be siliconed etc. No direct water, but still - it's a bathroom, so... moisture etc. + cut out for bath waste.

My questions is: I'm going to need to put a subfloor down (joists are good and plenty of noggins) and am wondering if Marine Ply or Structural ply would be suitable for the subfloor - bearing in mind it will be exposed under the bath, what would be best? Looking at 18mm minimum.

Also, if it needs sealing - what should I use? I've some SRB spare...

      Thanks all for your time.

    2. A decent WBP ply will do, marine ply costs a fortune, it's all to be covered anyway, 18mm thickness for 400 centres joists, 22mm for 600mm centres. SBR is fine.
    3. Have a similar set-up with WBP & SBR lasted years so far withoout any issue.
    4. Marine ply would be totally over the top, go for WBP as others have already suggested. ;)
    5. I have used 22mm T&G chipboard flooring in all the bathrooms I've worked on, and never had a problem yet. Get the slightly more expensive chipboard intended for wet environments. I pay about £12 for a 1200mm x 600mm 22mm board.

    Quick Tip: Laying Bathroom Tile

Successfully laying bathroom tile requires careful planning.

How to Tile a Bathroom, Laying Bathroom Tile

    Photo: Flickr

While many people consider laying bathroom tile a do-it-yourself project for money-saving reasons, there are many factors that can make or break the job. This quick guide shows you how to tile a bathroom correctly.

    Bathroom Tile Installation
Once you've determined the type of tile you need, think about how it will be installed. The substrate, or what tile is installed on top of, is just as important as the tile itself. A flexing floor or a wall that is uneven can lead to broken tiles and failed grout.

Water-resistant backer board, not drywall, should be used under the tile that will get wet. Whether it's backer board, plywood or concrete, the substrate needs to be sound, clean and dimensionally stable. Surfaces need to be level or plumb and true to plane, as the pros say. That means no bumps.

Any cracks or voids can compromise even the best tile job. The only way to be sure the tile sticks fast is to use a notched trowel to apply adhesive to the substrate.

    Create Space
The space between the tiles should be uniform, so use spacers if your tiles don't come on mesh sheets. The larger the tile, the larger the space should be between them. Some do-it-yourselfers will make the mistake of pushing tiles too close together to reduce grout lines. Without enough surface area, grout won't bond well and can fail prematurely, leaving room for leaks and water damage. It's also very important to let the adhesive cure fully.

    Follow Instructions
Follow the manufacturer's instructions and stay off the installation the required amount of time before you grout the tile.

    Condo Bathroom Fan

    Condo Bathroom Fan

    1. Can these be installed without access to the attic area? I live in a condo, and would desperately like to rid myself of the builder grade fan I have now. While there is attic space above the fan, there is no access to that area. When I contacted a local contractor who was recommended by the local Panasonic dealer he spent all of five seconds looking at the ceiling and quoted me $125 per fan to install one. He did not pull the cover off the current fan to measure depth or do anything else.

After looking at some of the previous posts on this forum it appears to me that the ceiling would need to be opened up so that the fan can be properly secured to the joists. Once completed new drywall and texturing would be necessary. Is this a correct assumption?

    2. There will need to be access to connect the duct properly to the fan unit.
The drywall can be trimmed back to mount the fan to the joists, and it will depend on how much different the existing fan is as to how large the drywall repair will need to be.

the whisper fit is made to be able to install from bottom. It comes with brackets that fold in half so it fits the small opening and then it flips out to reach the studs. Then you slip the fan directly up on the brackets.

    5. they can be installed from below, the ducting is challenge. Try to use as little flexible duct as possible. You may be able to use the flexible aluminum duct and form it back into shape as the housing is installed into the ceiling. Depends on the size of the opening in the housing and if it has a damper that is easily removable. Also if it is in an unconditioned space it should be insulated.
    6. Well it only took eight months, but they are finally installed! Buying the fans - easy. Finding a local contractor to install them - difficult. Short version - the first four contractors either never showed up for the appt, or never returned my call after coming out and giving me an estimate. The electrician who did the job took about three hours for two fans. The first one went in smoothly, but we ran into some challenges on the second one.

Overall it was worth the time and money to get them installed. Significantly quieter than the builder grade fans! The shower is louder than the fan.

Only one oddity. Both are connected to Leviton preset timers. One is from their now discontinued Acenti line and works perfectly fine. The other is connected to one from their Decora line, but the timer (Leviton LTB60) buzzes when you select one of the presets. Worked perfectly fine before we started with the old fan, but buzzes when connected to the new one. A call to Leviton yielded two possibilities - 1) the Panasonic fan is incompatible with the Leviton timer, or 2) the Leviton timer is faulty. Has anyone run into this problem?

    7. I am going to vote that the leviton timer is not compatible. The current draw of your new fan is not enough. Does your new fan have a light in it? If so if it has a cfl or led swap it for a incandescent bulb and it might be a cheap fix. Otherwise look for a timer that requires a neutral wire to work. Generally they will work fine from no load to what ever they are rated for.

IMHO, what may be better is to change the switch out for a moisture sensing one that will turn the fan on automatically, then shut it off (you can still turn it on manually). I find that it actually works best to try to remember to turn it on manually, but it will then only run until the room ends up dry. This is actually sensing moisture, not humidity (you test it by blowing into the sensor - the humidity in your breath will trigger it on). Panasonic sells this branded under their name, but it is made by another company and may be cheaper bought from them. FWIW, what works better is to have this built into the fan, but then, it becomes hard to turn it on if you want to vent the room for purposes other than moisture!? It's handy for guests and children that might not remember to turn it on, and like your timer, it will shut itself off by itself, but does it via both time and/or moisture.

There are others out there that should work, but buying one branded by Panasonic pretty much guarantees it will work with one of their fans. I put one of these into my mother's guest bathroom where most people would not think to turn the fan on. I usually remember to turn it on before my shower, but not always, and it's nice to have it come on automatically. I don't visit all that often.

Installing a Panasonic WhisperQuiet fan in the ceiling of a condo. There was just a small joist space here. The fan that was removed was from 1971. a 10" round, which gets replaced by cutting the hole square at 10.25"
This piece gets wired up, and the flex duct installed to it with duct tape. Then this part is lifted into the ceiling space and attached, the square fan box clips in and is secured. Then the fan motor installs with the supplied three attachment screws and plugs in.

      Lastly the grill snaps in.

Wake to an orange sun in the center of a lavender daisy against bright green skies on your custom bath decor. Or daisies of all colors in a patchwork of blues and yellows, pinks and oranges. Leave a white glow in skies of gold and rose behind yellow and orange daisies on custom size towels. Hang white daisies at the end of thin green stems against a blur of dark lime of your walls.

Make it a soft blue daisy blurred against emerald. From golden light on yellow daisies in a sage blur to orange and green rippling beneath orange petals, let daisy shower curtains bring a fresh summer day to your bathroom. Put a sunburst in blue skies behind jade fields with a daisy slightly shadowed on your shower curtain.

Leave fresh daisies in green grass on custom bath mats and summer fields full of daisies under blue skies on custom towels. With hearts at their center and scattered around hearts in bright retro colors and patterns, this daisy collection puts the petals of daisies in your bathroom for you to tuck between your toes or run up your shower curtain. Leave big white daisies with turquoise and gold beside pink hibiscus and purple irises.

Suspend lilac daisies against ivory skies. Paint a summer field under blue skies. From blue retro daisies flirting at the edges of your shower with stripes of blue to pale pastel contemporary daisies filling the skies with soft color, these daisy designs will keep summers freshness in your bathroom shower.

There are varying types of daisy flowers. The most commonly seen daisy has longer white petals so you'll be able to display the decor on cream themed design and it will bring out both of the light colors which represents pureness and righteousness. Mesembryanthemum daisies with different colored petals show cheerfulness so decorating with these daisy bath decor will rejuvenate any space. The gorgeous dandelion, marigold and chrysanthemum flower bath decor make surrounding yellow decor pop and stand out. Decorate with these blossoming flowers for a magical touch to any interior.
